Easy to sew, lets get started.

You will need 2 squares of fabric. Green and Orange
3 Pipe cleaners for the legs.
2 Eyes.
Black embroidery thread for the mouth.

Trace the pieces onto the felt. There is a top and bottom part of the body pattern piece. The top should be orange and the bottom green. You will need 6 of each and make sure to add the markings for the eye and leg placements. I marked lightly with pencil, but you could also sew a small stitch with an contrasting color thread to show the marking.

Sew the top and bottom part of the body pattern together and then start sewing the 6 body pattern pieces together. Make sure that the seams of the orange and green parts line neatly up.

Stuff in the frog a little bit and then insert the eyes. Complete stuffing the frog and sew the opening close.
Lets make the green tuft at the top of the frog. Cut short pieces of embroidery thread, tie them together and insert at the top seam of the frog. Secure the tuft with small stitches to 'close' the opening at the top. I couldn't decide which color to choose!
Fold the leg piece in half and sew from the toe to the top of the leg. I choose not sew them with the right sides together, since it would've made turning them around very difficult. Sew with small stitches to keep the edges neat.

Before you insert a pipe cleaner into each leg, bend the end over a little bit, so that it won't poke through the fabric. Insert them into the leg and cut shorter if needed. Do this for all 4 legs.
Pin the legs to the body where you made the markings. I bent the legs before sewing to make sure I was happy with their shape. Longer legs in the front and short ones at the back. You will see that the feet has a specific shape. Make sure that you have 2 right feet and 2 left feet.
After sewing the feet on, I made an extra holding stitch between the leg and the body, just to make sure that the legs are not too wobbly.
Using the black embroidery thread, sew a mouth onto the frog. I used a long needle to go from one side to the other. You can sew it onto the seam line, or make a more friendlier frog with a slight curve upwards.
Today is our turn to contribute to Sew a Softie 2018. I've been playing around with the idea to create softies native to our country. So here, hopefully the first of many, is the King of the Bushveld, the Lion.

The lion on our continent is the most majestic, dangerous, and absolute beautiful animal. Lions are found in the Bushveld, a dry, Savannah part of our country. The female lion is a lioness and babies are called cubs.

Lets get started on our softie.

Any brown felt will do. A variety of colors will give your softie more depth.

Cut out the pattern pieces. Stick them on hard cardboard - it is easier to work with and your pieces with last longer.

Cut 2 bodies, 9 mane hair pieces, 1 chest piece, 2 tail pieces.

Pin the mane hair pieces to one body part and pin the chest piece to the other body part.

Start sewing the chest piece to the first body part. I used embroidery thread and running stitch.

Mark a small triangle for the nose and fill in with embroidery thread. I used a small piece of 'stitch and tear' at the back of where I sew the nose. It makes the felt a bit stronger and makes sewing the nose easier as the fabric is sturdier.

You can insert the eyes at this point if you are using safety eyes. It depends what kind of eyes you are going to use. I couldn't make up mind on which eyes to use. At the end I used clear glass eyes, which I sewed in after stuffing the head.

Pin the 2 body pieces together and sew them together. Leave a 'leave open' space between the legs. I used running stitch, but you could use blanket stitch as well.
A while back I asked my friend from @creativemeza if she thinks I can make my own yarn bowls from polymer clay. I really wanted to make my own yarn bowls and was busy exploring the different ways I could achieve this.

We then came up with the idea to ask another friend who makes ceramics, to pour us a couple of bowls. Isn't it wonderful to have such a great circle of friends!!! We worked on the greenware to cut out our shapes and sculpted sheep, bears and little dolls to add to our bowls.

It was quite a long process and a lot of learning took place. I learned that the clay is super soft and one has to work very carefully. I learned which shapes works best on certain bowl shapes, how much glaze is needed and how firing at the wrong temperature can influence the colors.

We starting cutting and sculpting on the greenware. We let it dry out completely before painting bowls.

Next up was fine sanding and smoothing out some rough edges on the bowls. This was the most challenging part. They are extremely soft to work with and some didn't make it. Then came the exciting part of painting the bowls.

It is my turn today to inspire you with a stunning, yet easy to sew pattern.

For us here in South Africa our Festive Season is sunny and hot and we do enjoy spending time outside.

My pattern today is a simple Christmas tree, but the fun is in decorating it with anything you have in the house that you can sew on. (or maybe even glue it on) Any old pieces of ribbon, buttons and beads will do it!

I used felt, some old rick-rack from my moms stash and a bit of left over sequins.
Cut 2 of the tree pattern. Sew on your decorations on one of the tree parts before you sew the 2 parts together. Mix and match your decorative bits. Plan before you start sewing.
After everything is sewed on. Sew the back and front pieces together and leave an opening at the bottom. Fold you pieces of rick-rack or ribbons to the inside before you sew, it will leave it nice and neat.
The fox I designed might be for a more experienced sewer, because I sew the pieces with the right sides together and the turn the softie inside out. You can however, just do a normal outside seam without turning.

I first trace the pattern on 2 pieces of felt. I love using transparencies for my templates. They are more sturdier to work with. I sewed the heart and the arms into place onto one of the pieces. I used my sewing machine for the heart and arms as it gives a better finish. But you can hand sew them on as well. It will look good with contrasting thread.

Place the second pattern piece over the first one, with the 'right sides' together and sew around trace lines. I find it easier to sew around the trace lines first before I cut the pieces out. This helps to keep the seam neat and makes it a lot easier to work with. Remember to leave an opening on the side to turn and stuff later.
Sew the tail in the same way. First sew and then cut it out.
Turn the softie inside out, taking care to get the nose out all the way.

Insert the eyes at this point. I used 2 different sizes to add to the whimsical effect.

Stuff your foxie. I prefer to use poly-puff stuffing. It is small, soft pieces of stuffing which allows me to stuff my toys without any bumps. Close the opening.

How exciting it is to write this post on behalf of my girls. When I told them that I would like to challenge them to be responsible to teach at least one friend to sew a soft toy, they were super excited. Greetings from South Africa from excited Sew a Softie ambassadors!

As a little girl I was always around my mom who spent a lot of time on her sewing machine. I was given scraps of fabric, buttons and left over bits to keep me busy. She also taught me the value of not wasting any materials as there was always just enough.

Plan before you cut. (I can hear her voice while I'm typing :-) I try to instill the same love of sewing, fabric and beautiful craft things, in them too.

I challenged my girls to come up with something that anyone would be able to sew. They first planned their design on paper and we looked at keeping the shapes big and that there were no sharp corners or edges. This just makes it easier to sew.

Cut the template (your picture/pattern pieces) out of the paper. I must also add here that I prefer to use more sturdier templates such as old x-ray sheets or old school transparencies. It lasts longer if your are going to make more that one softie.

Trace them onto your fabric. We used felt. Remember to trace on 2 pieces of fabric so that you have a front and back. Cut your pieces out. Also cut spots, eyes and any other decorations you would like to add.

First sew on any spots and eyes to the front part of your design. We first stick them on with a bit of glue. This makes it easier to sew them on as they moved around.

Amelia chose to add beautiful safety eyes to her fish. If you have safety eyes, insert them before you sew the back part together. It was decided that the fish also needed a mouth and I help her sewing on a thin line after the fish was stuffed. It could also be done before the back and front is sewed together. Elmarie chose stick on eyes which we glued on after her ladybug was finished.
After all the details is added to the front part, you can sew the front and back part together. Remember to leave a little opening to add the stuffing. Do not stuff your softie to hard - the poor thing! Close the opening when you are done.
This is one of those patterns. The Early Bird - Night Owl from http://mmmcrafts.blogspot.co.za/. One the one side of the pillow is an Owl and on the other side is an Early bird.

So digging in my fabric stash, I found some old Ric-Rac that belonged to my mother. I made a couple of these pillows. They were a hit!
I always
plan our long school holidays very carefully.
Well, I try to. Since I teach in
the same school where my kids are, we are on holiday together. I thoroughly enjoy my holidays with my kids
and I am a firm believer that they have to keep themselves busy. I do not constantly entertain them, but I
will provide different activities and materials for them to use. We all love creative things and my girls are
always busy sticking, drawing and designing, baking, or just planning what they
would like to do. And…. if I can give
them something to do by themselves, it also gives me the chance to do my own
thing.

This past
holiday, I acquired (thanks to a special friend) some teddy bear fur for them
to make their own teddy bears. My oldest
2 (twins) are 7 years old, and the youngest is 3. We used a simple teddy bear pattern for them to make. (Patterns available from Tin Soldiers Studio https://www.etsy.com/shop/megbear99?ref=search_shop_redirect) We chose a pattern not to big so that
they will feel overwhelmed, but also not too small. It makes working with the fabric so much
easier. I must say here that we do have some experience in sewing and they are
always around me when I am sewing. As a
mother I felt quiet nervous in the beginning letting them work with a sharp
needle, but I also learnt not to underestimate them. They do learn quickly!! I know from experience from doing some sewing
in class, that the biggest challenge with children is, that they struggle to
get the cotton through the needle and to make a knot.

The first
step for them was to choose which colour they would like to start with. Of course 3 little girls choose pink! They couldn’t contain their excitement.

Tracing the
pattern onto the fabric took a bit of patience.
The 3 year old need some help of course, but the other 2 caught on
quickly and they did it by themselves.

We preceded
to cut the pieces out and started to sew them together. Here and there they would miss the fabric or
they would make the stitches too big. I afterwards
just checked and did some extra sewing over the ‘weak’ areas. We used back
stitches. I have found it works easier
for children. It is not always the
neatest, but it does the job.

Lots of it. But the most important part
was that it did not matter that they did not work the stitches a hundred

It did not matter that the little bear’s eyes was not symmetrical. All that mattered was that they did it

My husband works in a neighbouring country and during our school holiday we had the chance to visit and see where he works. It is about 5 hours drive and the girls were so excited to use their passports (and to get it stamped).

I travelled alone with them - which was a challenge on its own, but I tried to plan the trip, snacks and activities carefully and we arrived without any problem, tears and frustration.

I made them each a "car-bag" to keep all their stuff in. I used an old shopping bag, cut and sewed it a bit smaller. It fits perfectly over the seat and it kept their stuff neat.

In Swaziland, we visited the Glass Factory. Please read more about it here. http://ngwenyaglass.co.sz It was fascinating and inspiring to see how everything used in the factory is either re-used and recycled.

The Ndwenya mine is an old iron mine near the city of Mbabane. An absolutely stunning view with the trees taking back their own territory.

It was a very special trip and quite close to home. We will definitely be back there soon.
This meaning for me that I don't want to buy vegetables, I want to grow my own. Setting out I decided to go big and plant enough for our family of 5 to eat, and some extra for the birds :-). I only planted veggies that we will eat and I have a whole timetable set out on when to plant and replant, so that we constantly have veggies to eat.

This is what the patch looked like before I started. A lot of hard word went into digging out all the grass, adding lots of fresh compost into the garden and getting rids of weeds.

Then next step was to close the garden with a fence, to keep our mischievous puppies out. Then the fun part began, planting some seedlings and seeds.

A friend of mine gave me some black berries plants which I planted against the fence in hope that it will climb along and cover the fence completely with time.

What it looks like at the moment. Things are coming on nicely. I do have a battle with snails and the birds eating my seeds. Guess I will have to learn and share.

We are in the mddle of winter here and we have some lovely vegetables in our garden. The favourite being green peas, which my girls eat straight from the plants. Our broccoli and cauliflower will be ready soon. It gives me such pleasure to teach my children and to get them involved.

In six weeks we will be starting preparing our summer veggies and making sure that we have seedings ready for summer! I can't wait!

I suppose I do this to see what their skill level is, but also to get to know them. This year I added 'blowing bubbles' to their portraits. I used balloons for the bubbles. They quite enjoyed it! I think it comes from my childhood where my mom always had flowers in the house. Anything from a branch with colourful seeds on, to beautiful cut flowers from her garden. I don't have near the green fingers that she has, but every now and then I have success. This year I am particularly proud of the Orchid Cactus ( Disocactus xhybridus) that is in full bloom.
So I decided to give them a more visual aid of how it works.

Everyone knows the sugar crystal method, but I think their crystals were a big success.

We simply used 4 cups of sugar to 1 cup water and boiled it until all the sugar dissolved. Each one chose a different colouring for the jar. The most important thing is to wet the kebab stick and dip it in the sugar, so that the crystals have a place to start. Let it dry thoroughly before placing it in the dissolved sugar mixture.

We placed glass containers in the sun and left if for 4 weeks. What fun for them to check everyday if their crystals have 'grown'.
I planned an Autumn lesson with my Grade 1 Art pupils and wow! Look how stunning their 3D leaves turned out.

Their class teacher added it to her display board in class and together it created this stunning effect.

I simply used 2 pre-printed papers with the outline of leaves on.

Paper 1: Draw patterns on the leaves using black colouring pencil. Then paint with watercolour paint over the patterns. We discussed autumn colours and leave textures.

Paper 2: Paint leaves with watercolour paint and paint background blue.

Cut the leaves on paper 1 out.

Use a spacer (I used pieces of polystyrene, but you can use rolled pieces of paper) and glue the cut leaves onto paper 2. The spacer creates the 3D effect. We used wood glue that is a bit runny, so the artwork does need some time to dry.
